Turgenev’s islands are formed by the alluvial floodplain processes by rejection of sand masses from the left bank of permanent and temporary canals and rivers of the hydrological system of the old stream of the Volga river and turned into an archipelago complex of sandy islands. These are relic islands with its unique flora and fauna, as they emerged from the flooding of the Volga’s floodplain.
The largest of the islands is the Nameless Island (several kilometers long and several hundred meters wide) stretched from north-west to south-east. The island is picturesque, indented with numerous bays, creeks and lagoons, which are small islands of various sizes and configurations.
